WHAT ARE COOKIES?
The Provision on cookies d.d. 8 May 2014 defines cookies as “small text strings that the sites visited by the user send to his terminal (usually to the browser), where they are stored before being re-transmitted to the same sites at the next visit by the same user. During navigation on a site, the user may also receive cookies on his terminal that are sent from different sites or web servers (so-called “third parties”), on which some elements may reside (such as, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to pages of other domains) present on the site that the user is visiting”.
Cookies can be used for various purposes such as for the execution of computer authentication, storage of information relating to configurations of machines that access the server, favorite websites, etc. The different types of cookies provided for will be illustrated below.
TYPES OF COOKIES
Technical cookies: Technical cookies are those cookies that are essential for browsing and can be temporary (stored only for the duration of browsing, once the browser is closed these cookies will be deleted) or persistent (stored for a longer period and will not be deleted once browsing is finished). These cookies, precisely because they have technical characteristics, are not subject to prior consent from users.
Profiling cookies: they are used to identify user preferences and, based on these preferences, send advertising messages or commercial offers. By virtue of this reason, they require prior consent from the user for their installation.
Analytical cookies: these are cookies used to monitor visits and use of the web page at a statistical level. One of the major services used by websites is the one provided by Google Inc. called “Google Analytics”, through which it is possible to have statistical data about navigation on the web page. This type of cookie is considered the same as profiling cookies, unless the IP address is completely or partially anonymized, thus eliminating the sharing of information with Google (in this case considering them technical cookies).
The types of cookies described above can be distinguished into “first-party” cookies, processed and managed directly by the owner of the website, or “third-party” cookies, processed and managed by third parties other than the owner (for example Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+ etc.).
